Calorie and Nutrition Labeling on Menus: What Chains Must Show

The rule is narrower than most operators think and wider in one place they miss: the full nutrition set you must produce on request.

En resumen

  • The federal rule covers chains of 20 or more locations doing business under the same name and offering substantially the same menu items. Below that threshold it does not apply, though a state or city rule still might.

  • Calories go next to the item, in type no smaller and no less prominent than the item name or price.

  • Two statements are mandatory on the menu itself: the 2,000-calorie context statement and a notice that further nutrition information is available.

  • The part operators forget is the written set: nine more nutrients that must be produced on request, in writing, at the location.
