The question is not whether to use machine translation. It is which parts of a menu you are allowed to point it at.

Kurz gefasst

  • Translate descriptions, not dish names. A named dish is closer to a proper noun than to a sentence.

  • The failures are predictable: regional ingredients, cuts of meat, cooking methods, and protected names.

  • Allergen and dietary terms need a native speaker, once, per language. A mistranslated allergen is a safety issue, not a typo.

  • Draft, review, approve. The review step is what makes machine translation safe to publish, and it is cheap if the draft is decent.
